This street directory lists all of the businesses that are included in the Darlaston section of Kelly’s 1904 Staffordshire Directory.

By this time the town centre had fully developed, almost anything could be purchased there. Several of the many and varied retailers remained in business for many years, and became household names.

They included William Careless’s sweet shop at Catherine’s Cross, J. W. Baker, the ironmonger in King Street, whose business would eventually become part of the Owen Organisation.

Other once familiar names included James Bass, the furniture manufacturer and dealer in Walsall Road, John Parker the Blockall newsagent, Joseph Bayley, the King Street butcher, Edward Nightingale’s shop in Factory Street, and the Home and Colonial Stores in King Street.

There were many family-run corner shops, and as well as public houses, a staggering 55 beer retailers, which shows what a popular drink beer was at the time.

Many people relied on pawning items to tide them over financially. The list below includes twelve pawnshops.

Frederick Stevenson's shop at 47 King Street.

Surprisingly there were nine businesses still involved in the gunlock trade, either making or filing gunlocks, and unsurprisingly, no less than thirty one factories producing nuts and bolts.

Also listed are some of the town’s large factories, which sadly are now gone. Those listed include Garrington & Sons in Willenhall Road, J. & R. Rose in Willenhall Street, Charles Richards, James Wiley, and Rubery & Company (later Rubery Owen) in The Green, and E. C. and J. Keay in Walsall Road.

It was a prosperous time for the town. Local industries were expanding, jobs were available for everyone, and large numbers of people shopped in the town centre.
