The following photos were kindly sent by Christine and John Ashmore. All except one were taken by their uncle, Richard Ashmore, who left school around 1921. He started his working life as a messenger boy, delivering telegrams by hand. He was based at Victoria Road Post Office, where the messages for the telegrams were received in Morse Code. The overhead telegraph wires, which were on poles, went through Victoria Park. One day the wires were struck by lightning which destroyed the line fuse box. Part of it flew across the room and smashed the glass on the front of the post office clock. The glass wasn't replaced, and the clock remained like that for many years.

Richard lived at Bentley, and remembered delivering a telegram to Bentley Hall when it was still occupied.
