The other children of John Duffield and Maria
Samuel, their
third child, was baptised in Darlaston on 26th
December, 1802. He is probably the Samuel Duffield
who married Hannah Sheldon 11th Aug., 1822 at Saint
Peter's Collegiate Church, Wolverhampton and had a
number of children, including John who was baptised
at St. Lawrence, Darlaston on 23rd February, 1834.
The 1841 Census shows Samuel and Hannah living in Wisemore,
Walsall Foreign with children Nancy, 15, William,
14, James, 12, Maria, 10, John, 8, and Mary, 3. The
1851 Census shows that the family had
returned to Darlaston and were living in Cock Street: Samuel Duffield aged 48, a Trigger Stamper, with his
wife Hannah aged 50 and children John, 17, a Button
Forger, Thomas aged 9 and Mary aged 12, all born
Darlaston. There is a possible death, for his wife
Hannah in 1851. By the time of the 1861 Census,
Samuel was widowed and still working as a gunlock stamper. Samuel was living with his daughter Nancy
(shown as a Widow) and her children Hannah Duffield
aged 11 and Thomas Duffield aged 13 in Pinfold
Street, Darlaston. No marriage has been found for
Nancy, so the “widow” may be a euphemism to explain
her two children. Both the children worked in a
Carpet Bag Frame shop. There is the death of a
Samuel Duffield in this area in 1863. As he does not
appear in the 1871 Census, it is likely that this is
the correct one.
The next child of
John and Maria, Nancy, was baptised at Darlaston on
6th June, 1805. The Parish Registers show that Nancy
Duffield, of Dale End, Darlaston died aged 14, only
a few months after her father was executed. She was
buried at Darlaston on 4th October, 1819, with the
Rector, S. Lowe, officiating at the burial, as he
did for her father.
Sarah Duffield
was baptised in Darlaston on 27th March, 1808,
daughter of John and Maria. She married John Todd, a
miner. Two children of John Todd and Sarah were
baptised in St. Lawrence, Darlaston - Matthias on
18th June, 1826 who was buried 4 days later, and
Sarah on 2nd September, 1827. In 1841 John Todd was a
coal miner and living with wife Sarah and daughter
Sarah aged 12 in New Street, Darlaston. In 1846
Sarah Todd was a witness at the marriage of her
nephew James Duffield to Miriam Groves. In 1851
Census John Todd is still a coal miner and he and
Sarah are living in New Street, Darlaston. At the
time of the 1861 Census Sarah was living with her
husband in New Street, Darlaston. John Todd aged 54
is described as a crippled iron miner, born in
Walsall. He probably died in 1864. No further trace
has been found of Sarah.
William Duffield
was born to John and Maria on 26th June, 1810 and
baptised at Darlaston on 29th July, 1810. He became
a tailor and at the time of the 1841 Census is
living in Walsall Street, Darlaston. With him are
wife Mary aged 30, children Maria aged 6, Harriot
aged 3 and Mary aged 9 months, as well as two
apprentices and a journeyman tailor. By the time of
the 1861 Census the family have moved to Enfield
Street, Wednesbury where William is living with his
wife Mary and children Maria, 26 a housemaid,
Harriet, 23 and Alfred, 18, both servants, and 12
year-old Mary a scholar. The whole family is shown
as born in Darlaston. Parish Registers indicate that
William and Mary had at least one more child than
shown living with them in the 1841 and 1851
Censuses. Their son, Mark Robert Duffield was
baptised at Darlaston on 2nd August, 1846 and in the
1861 Census is a 14 year old Linen Draper's
Apprentice living with his employer in Wednesbury.
By 1871 William, wife Mary and daughter Mary aged 22
were living in High Street, West Bromwich and all
three give their occupation as “Tailor and Hatter”.
Neither William nor his wife Mary are found in the
1881 Census so they had probably died by this time.
The PRO Indexes show possible deaths in Aston in
1879 for Mary and early 1881 for William.
Thomas Duffield,
son of John and Maria, was baptised on 30th August,
1812. He married in about 1834 and moved to West
Bromwich. He lost his first wife, and the 1841 Census
shows Thomas, 20, Stamper with Mary, 15 and Maria, 6
(note that ages of adults were rounded down in this
Census) living on Bromford Street, West Bromwich.
Thomas had married young Mary Alexander in St.
Martin, Birmingham on 16th August, 1840. In 1842 the
family was living in Moor Street, West Bromwich when
7 year old Maria, daughter from his first marriage,
died of Typhus on 17 December. In 1851 the family
are still living in Moor Street, West Bromwich with
seven children (including 2-year-old twins) and
Mary's brother Henry Alexander as a lodger. By the
time of the 1861 Census Thomas was again a widower
living at 28 Moor Street, West Bromwich. There is a
2-year-old son John in the household so it is likely
that Mary, who died early in 1859, died about the
time he was born. In 1871 Thomas, aged 50 and a
stamper of gun furniture, was living in Sandwell
Road in West Bromwich with three of his children. As
in the 1861 Census, Thomas is considerably
under-stating his age. Son Henry was 22 and also a stamper of gun furniture. His daughter Clementina
Duffield was now with the family, having in 1861
been an 8 year old servant in the household of John
Wincott in Newhall Street, West Bromwich. The
youngest child, John Thomas now aged 12 was a
scholar. In 1881 Thomas, now shown correctly as aged
69, was living at 39 Summer Street in West Bromwich
as a boarder in the house of his son Henry, now
married with a family. Thomas died aged 71 in 1883.
The last child of
John and Maria was Henry born 13th August, 1813 and
baptised at Darlaston on 22nd August, 1813. The
Parish Registers show that he was buried aged 4
months on 30th December, 1813, so was the only one
of their eight children not to survive infancy.
No death has been
found in Darlaston for John's wife Maria but it is
possible that she re-married or died elsewhere.
