Ralph Reader
Ralph Reader was born in Crewkerne, Somerset on 25th May, 1903. He went to
America and made a name for himself on Broadway. He was known as 'The Kid Dance
Director' because of his performing, writing and directing skills. During that
time he worked with Al Jolson. He returned to the UK in 1928 and starred in the
musical 'Good News', also making a name for himself for his choreography and as
a director.
He was always involved in the scouting movement and created the first Gang Show
in 1932. It was called 'The Gang's all Here!'. Ralph also created the RAF Gang
Shows during World War 2. A number of famous personalities started their careers
in his shows, including Dick Emery, Peter Sellers, and Tony Hancock. Ralph was
also a prolific song writer.
Ralph's last Gang Show took place at the Gaumont State Theatre, London in 1974.
It was called the 'Farewell London Gang Show'. He received many awards including
an MBE and later the CBE. Ralph died in 1982.
