Derek Roy

Comedian Derek Roy made a name for himself on radio in the late 1940s and early 1950s. His show 'Hip Hip Hoo Roy' was a great hit in the late 1940s. It included Spike Milligan who helped write the scripts and introduced 'The Famous' Eccles into the show. Roy became one of the biggest radio stars of the day and used to host 'Variety Bandbox' on alternate weeks. This was a talent show and many famous names found their way onto the show, including Michael Bentine, Jimmy Edwards, Tony Hancock, Alfred Marks, Morecombe and Wise, Harry Secombe, Peter Sellars, Graham Stark and Harry Worth.

Another of Derek's radio series was called 'Happy Go Lucky'. The shows which were broadcast in 1951 were written by Alan Simpson and Ray Galton.

Roy also appeared in one of Anne Shelton's films called 'Dance With Me' along with Max Wall.
