U
UPLANDS AVENUE, Finchfield
Named after Uplands Farm which covered the whole of this
area. The farm buildings was situated towards the lower half, between
the bottom of Willow Road and the back end of Uplands Drive. The
remains were still there in the late 1930s. In 1936 there
were only four houses in the avenue: 12, 14, 20 and 22. These were two
lots of semis. My claim to fame is that I was the first baby born
in Uplands Avenue. We lived at no. 20 and behind us were the
cottage gardens. I planted an acorn in the garden and the oak tree
is still there but, as part of the garden was sold for development by a
later occupant, it is now in the garden of a house on a small estate.
