Grocer's Shop, Penn Road

The grocer's shop at the corner of Penn Road and Fisher Street was, at one time, Norman Barnfather, Tailors.  But it seems to have been a grocer's shop even earlier than that as the side wall to Fisher Street bears this tiled advertisement:-

Under the peeling white gloss paint, you can read the full text:  OUR SPECIALITY DEVONSHIRE FRESH BUTTER DAILY RED WHITE AND BLUE COFFEE.

Lea Road and the roads off it were developed in the late 1890s and this shop was presumably part of the original development.  The smarter area between Lea Road and Penn Road had no shops in it but the smaller houses on the other side had corner shops and pubs.
