Listing: c.1845, altered. For John William Sparrow, iron-master.
Comment: A typically large house of an aspiring gentleman, built in
what was then a fairly rural area, fronting a very old road. The diapered
brickwork and roof, the quoins and porte cochere can all be interpreted as
displays of wealth.
The grounds have now been extensively built on by the City Council, which
occupies the house and the new buildings mainly for social services purposes.
