Comment: Bilston Police Station is unique in
that it is reported to be the only police station in the country that is
surrounded by a moat. The moat is about ten feet deep and six feet wide.
It proved useful during the First World War when the building was
besieged by an angry mob. They were demanding the release of some
soldiers who had been arrested for disorderly behaviour whilst on leave
from the trenches in France.
But some people have suggested it it not really defensive but
simply a convenient way of getting access to the
underground cells.
