Listing: Mid C18 with later additions. A rare survival of a farm house
in an area of suburban development.
Comment: A charming and rather elegant example of eighteenth century
vernacular interpretation of fashionable style.
The area was, until the 1930s, almost exclusively agricultural. It seems
likely that most of the farmhouses in the area would have been built as a result
of enclosure but there seems to have been no study of the development of the
rural area which now forms the suburbs of Wolverhampton.
This house is now surrounded by suburbia. Unlike its newer neighbours it does
not stand back from the road but right up to it, thereby helping to define the
old line of Birches Barn Road - a road which is one of the early roads in the
area, long pre-dating this house.
