Listing: 2 houses, now offices. Early C19 with
late C20 alterations. left return to Dudley Road: 2 doorcases and shop
front removed.
Comment: This elegant building seems to be of a different
date from the rest of George Street but it contributes to a harmonious whole.
The reference to the "left return" in the listing is to the frontage of what is
now named as part of Snow Hill. The alterations were carried out as part
of the building of the Ring Road.
The building is occupied by a firm of solicitors, who named it after Lord
Denning, the Master of the Rolls and a judge for what seemed like most of the
second half of the 20th century. He was controversial and opinionated but had a
reputation as a liberal radical and a friend of the little man against the
Government. No doubt it was thought that his name would give a dynamic and
forward thinking air to the solicitors within.
