Listing: The Clock Tower, former Goodyear Tyre Factory,
Stafford Road. Comment: Square tower, originally built
as a water tower and arranged over four levels, standing to a height
of 20.5 metres. Lower two levels altered where enclosed by later
buildings; upper two levels of red brick, laid to English bond, with
rectangular, metal casements at the third level and clock faces at
the fourth level. Low-pitched "pagoda" roof surmounted by tall
flagpole.
Stylistically of the 1920s but possibly founded on an earlier
structure. A distinctive local landmark which is being retained,
restored and interpreted as part of the factory redevelopment, to
serve as a permanent reminder of the important part which Goodyear
played in the economic life of Wolverhampton for almost a century. |
