Listing: The Royal Oak public house on the corner of New
Street and Vaughan Road, Portobello. Comment:
A Tudor revival pub on an acute corner. It must be by the Butler
brothers (architects) as it is a smaller and re-worked version of
the New Inn, Bilston Road.
Windows, doors, chimneys and general
proportions all strongly resemble Butler work. Here the corner end
is slightly broader than the New Inn’s, and the angled part centres
on a projecting chimney with small windows in its canted sides.
Full height canted bays on the sides rise
through the eaves. A good landmark building in an area of modest
housing. |
