Wolverhampton's Locally Listed Buildings

Former YWCA hostel

Penn Road

Listing:  Pair of substantial Victorian villas converted to a hostel in 1930s.  Landmark value.

Comment:  Nothing seems to be known about when these things were built or who by or who for.  They are certainly large and prominent.  They are also characterless and ugly.  In 2002/3 they were converted into flats and the area around them covered with new build flats.  This building was not, at the time, locally listed and the developers were under no particular obligation to keep it.  But they did; and they designed the new build flats to suit this building (and made a rather better shot at it than the original).
