During the 1870s, many changes took place, which in the fullness of time, greatly benefitted the town and its inhabitants. There were also unfortunate happenings including severe weather and epidemics.

The town council made Wolverhampton a better place to live, for future generations, thanks to a number of schemes that began during the decade.
