The history of the church, particularly during its earlier years is complex. Worshippers suffered from religious intolerance followed by internal strife, when the congregation became divided over the question of doctrine.

The congregation has moved several times since the early 18th century, when it all began in a small meeting house in the centre of Wolverhampton.
