I must thank Christine and John Ashmore for the following
photographs, which were taken by their aunty Beat from her
home in Ward Street. The photographs were taken with her
"Box Brownie", and are believed to be from the 1930s. They
show a number of work's bands that were assembling in the
street in preparation for a march, probably to the nearby
Arboretum. Ward Street has changed beyond recognition
since the photos were taken. The houses were demolished to
make way for Chamber of Commerce House. |

W. Martin Winn Limited, nut and bolt manufacturer of
Station Works, Darlaston. |
The shop across the road was owned
and run by Miss Elsie Murphy, who sold a wide range of
products. The alleyway opposite led to several back
yards. The footpath went over the Holbrook which flows
out of the Arboretum on its way to The Bridge, and the
River Tame at James Bridge. |
If anyone has any information about the event, or
the bands, please
send me an email. I will be delighted to hear from
you. |
