The bottom of King Street in 1970 before redevelopment.

On the extreme right is Phillip's chemist shop and next door but one is Dewhurst's Butcher's shop. Phillip's was the last of the old shops to go. During demolition in January 1988 an original 17th century timber-framed building was discovered beneath the Victorian brickwork.

Another view taken on the same wet day, looking up the street.

On the extreme left is the Hitachi TV-Radio shop and next door is Firkin's the bakers. They had already vacated the shop and moved across the road in readiness for the demolition of the older properties. Next door is Lipton's supermarket and four doors along is Boots the chemist, who also found new premises across the road.

A final view of the doomed shops in the lower half of King Street. On the extreme left is part of Howard Brother's window. They sold and rented Bush and Murphy TVs, and were a record dealer. On the extreme right is Boots the chemist who would soon move to a much larger modern shop across the road.
Burtons was the place to go for a suit in Darlaston. They had a presence in the town for many years.

In the photograph the building is empty and awaiting demolition.

The top end of King Street in 1970. Most of the buildings in the photograph are long gone. Within a few years they were replaced by the modern shops that are there today.

On the far right is Burtons and next door is Hancox & McCarthy's jewellers shop. The empty shop with the for sale sign, used to be occupied by Stanton's the bakers. Underwood's next door are advertising their closing down sale.

Another view of J.T. Underwood's shoe shop. Underwoods sold quality shoes and were well known in the area.
A final view of Underwood's shop.
More of the shops awaiting demolition. On the left is John Adey's old butcher's shop and next door is R. Lewis's animal food shop, specialising in dog food, bird food and fish food.

Next door is Boynton & Son's old shop and on the right is the derelict J & K Butchers shop.

The view in the opposite direction looking towards Church Street.

On the extreme left is Stanburys' mens outfitters and tailors. This was a very old, well-established business in the town. The single story shop was an extension built in front of one of the fine town houses that were a feature of King Street before it became the main shopping area.

Next door is A.F. Parsons' newsagents and on the far right is another Boots the chemist.

A final view of King Street looking back towards Stanburys.

On the left is Winestores (Darlaston) Limited who sold wines and spirits. Next door was M. Baker's shop and next door to that a discount centre.
